Augmentative & Alternative Communication

Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)

AAC refers to any form of communication that is not oral speech. We all rely on communication that is alternative to speech, such as, gestures, facial expressions, visual signage in public and texting with friends.

Your child may benefit from access to AAC to allow them to communicate what they want, when they want.

AAC may be an effective way to support your child to:

  • Ask for help
  • Advocate for their needs
  • Greet and farewell others
  • Comment on an interest
  • Request their favourite game
  • Tell you about their day

At Connected Kids, we assess, trial, and recommend appropriate AAC options to support your child to communicate.

AAC options include:

  • High-tech AAC e.g., LAMP Words for Life, Proloquo2Go, TD Snap
  • Low-tech AAC e.g., Key Word Sign, visual choice boards
